오늘 소개하는 <#서촌체>는 서울의 서촌 지역 길거리 서체를 연구한 작업으로, 서울의 근현대 역사와 ‘동네’의 분위기를 함축하고 있는 길거리 간판 글꼴들을 기록해두고자 하는 의도에서 시작한 작업이라고 합니다. 간판 글씨 중 특징적인 요소들을뽑아서 서체로 재탄생시켰습니다. 근대화를 급하게 거치며 극도로 산업화되고 분화된 도시의 풍경에서 최종원은 미처 다듬어지지 않은 ‘인간적인’ 시각 이미지를 포착해 냅니다. 그렇게 수집한 비전문적이고 ‘촌스러운’ 글씨들을 해체하고, 특징을 추출하고 재구성함으로써 그 원형의 에너지와 속성을 더욱 명확하게 드러내는 글자를 새로이 만들어 냅니다.

서촌체 디자인을 위한 글자 채집
서촌체, 2017Choi Jongwon approaches design as if solving a quiz, trying to discover the most appropriate and precise form precise form under given circumstances. He does not necessarily follow the latest trends nor pursue decorative, technically-perfect graphics. Rather he thoroughly examines the contents and employs a clear composition that can reveal the context, while maintaining a witty attitude.
Choi runs his graphic design studio #CHUIGRAF and is the editor of a magazine for typeface designers. He is also the designer behind the posters for #ProjectHope? utilizing photograms to visually express hope, that is inherently blurry and difficult to grasp.
These two images are from #SeochonTypeface, a work that began as a personal study of typefaces of signboards in Seoul, which are embodiments of the modern and contemporary history of the city and the atmosphere of the particular neighborhood. Choi selected the most characteristic elements of the signs and created a typeface representative of the neighborhood of Seochon.
